What is Respiratory / Tracheo / Catheter Care?
Respiratory care can be required for patients with respiratory diseases like COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), ILD (Interstitial Lung Disease), OHS (Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome), Bronchiectasis etc.
A tracheostomy is usually done for one of three reasons: to bypass an obstructed upper airway; to clean and remove secretions from the airway; to more easily, and usually more safely, deliver oxygen to the lungs. The key concept of tracheostomy management is to ensure patency of the airway. A tracheostomy kit is to accompany the patient at all times and be checked each shift by the nurse caringfor the patient.
A catheter is a thin tube made from medical grade materials serving a broad range of functions. Catheters are medical devices that can be inserted in the body to treat diseases or perform a surgical procedure.Catheters can be inserted into a body cavity, duct, or vessel. Functionally, they allow drainage, administration of fluids or gases, access by surgical instruments and also perform a wide variety of other tasks depending on the type of catheter.
WHY it's required ?
Respiratory care is prescribed for patients with respiratory diseases for supplemental oxygen depending on the blood oxygen saturations. When on oxygen therapy, patient oxygen levels are to be regularly monitored by your therapist/nurse.
A tracheostomy is usually done for one of three reasons: to bypass an obstructed upper airway; to clean and remove secretions from the airway; to more easily and usually more safely, deliver oxygen to the lungs.
The purpose of the catheter is to drain urine from the bladder as it is very important to drain out excess unwanted fluids from the body to prevent infections.
