What is Neuro/Spinal/Ortho/Stroke Rehab?
Neurological disorders are diseases of the brain, spine and the nerves that connect them. There are more than 600 diseases of the nervous system, such as brain tumors, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease and stroke as well as less familiar ones such as front temporal dementia.
A stroke means that the blood supply to a part of the brain is suddenly cut off. The brain cells need a constant supply of oxygen from the blood. Soon after the blood supply is cut off, the cells in the affected area of brain become damaged or die. A stroke is sometimes called a brain attack.
Patients on the orthopedic service are those who require treatment for fractures, deformities, and diseases or injuries of some part of the musculoskeletal system. Some patients will require surgery, immobilization, or both to correct their condition.
Why Rehab is required?
Neuro Rehab - After brain surgery, it will take time for the patient to return to his/her usual level of energy. Healing requires extra rest.
The amount of time required to recover after brain surgery is different for each person and depends on:
- The procedure used to remove the brain tumor
- The location of the tumor within the brain
- Areas of the brain affected by the surgery
- The patient’s age and overall health
As an Orthopedic Surgery Patient post discharge from the hospital, there are a number of things you should understand to ensure the success of your orthopedic surgery and to facilitate rehab at home.
